Yep it’s forced Barnham Traincrew depot (which is above the Co-Op) to be closed while structural engineers assess the damage.

Talking of Barnham again yesterday my train home (to Clapham Junction) from Portsmouth was curtailed to Barnham due to a points failure in the Billingshurst area (can't find any points near there though). Arrived at Barnham at about 1850, waited on the train for 10 minutes, then shooed off and asked to wait for the next train to London (a slow train from Bognor Regis just after 1905). This waited at Barnham for 22 minutes while another 4 carriages attached (due to attach at Horsham) which had come from Southampton and Chichester. Then the train was diverted via the Brighton area, using the lesser used curve of track from Hove to Preston Park! Missing lots of stops it arrived at Clapham earlier than anticipated, in fact if I had booked the later train I would have arrived at Clapham bang on time.

That's the normal diversionary route for when the Arun Valley is blocked or has a problem. Just a slight correction though. The Cliftonville Spur (which is the rarely used track you mention between Hove and Preston Park) is actually used all the time by the Victoria to Littlehampton services and empties needing to access Lovers Walk from Brighton Platforms 1 & 2

The reliability of the Arun Valley services is to be absolutely pants. So often on RTT I see Arun Valleys heading up to Victoria well over 10 minutes late. I'm aware of hearsay that a timetable change could be in the pipeline to address this potentially by eliminating the splitting and attaching at Horsham or cutting Southampton's direct services up to Victoria. Its a difficult one because the Southampton to Gatwick link is popular and getting rid of the splitting and attaching would almost certainly mean one of Bognor Regis or Chichester has to lose one of its hourly trains to London (though an easy connection at Barnham could help mitigate this).

There’s currently a timetable consultation for the West Coastway; the following changes are proposed; London Victoria - Portsmouth & Bognor Regis via Horsham (still split & attaching at Horsham) Brighton - Southampton Brighton - Chichester via Littlehampton Barnham - Bognor Regis Shuttle All the above are 2 trains per hour, the Victoria - Littlehampton service will remain the same with additional calls at Lancing Link for the consultation document - www.southernrailway.com/-/media/goahead/gtr-all-shared-pdfs-and-documents/timetable-consultation-2023/west-coastway-timetables-changes-engagement.pdf

Looks like a good set of changes overall. Glad to see the new Brighton to Chichester services will effectively do the role the West Worthing services used to allowing the Southamptons to be sped up. Shame about the loss of direct Brighton-Portsmouth services but its a fair trade off for no longer having the hopelessly unreliable Southampton-Victoria services.

Brent Cross West will open on Sunday 10th December According to ianVisits, Brent Cross West will be served by all Luton and St Albans stopping services. Standard service pattern northbound will be 4tph to St Albans calling all stations, plus 2tph to Luton not calling at Hendon. Standard service pattern southbound will be 4tph round the Sutton Loop calling all stations, (2 clockwise, 2 anticlockwise) plus 2tph to Rainham not calling at Cricklewood or Kentish Town. Additional Luton-Orpington services call at peak times. The station includes passive provision for the new West London Orbital line if it goes ahead. There is also a public footbridge which will be open 24 hours and will be free to use, this will be the first pedestrian crossing of the railway in this area since the line was built in the 1860s. For anyone planning to visit the station on opening day, be aware there is no Thameslink service through the Central Core (Blackfriars-St Pancras Inyernational) on Sunday 10th December due to engineering work. www.ianvisits.co.uk/articles/brent-cross-west-londons-newest-railway-station-opens-on-10th-december-67278/

Go Ahead have lost the contract to provide rail replacement to GTR. Abellio Rail Replacement (Transport UK Group) will take over next year, I believe either in February or April. I predict that Go Ahead will still be involved as a supplier, as currently they run a large proportion in house, so Abellio may have issues finding enough suppliers

Yes from the looks of it ARR provides controllers, supervisors, ground staff and coordination between local subcontractors for the replacement buses but doesn’t really provide buses itself. They have staff in Scotland, Wales and England. It’s a lucrative contract by the sounds of it but can’t imagine they’ll make much money from it. Not once you pay staff and subcontractors.

This is all correct. Abellio will now facilitate all of GTR’s rail replacement (ordering the buses, sub-contracting, staffing). Go-Ahead could still be sub-contracted to do the work which I suspect they will as Abellio’s own operations are pre-occupied on TfL contracts. The new contract is expected to start in mid-February.

A lot of staff are from the South East and Abellio have to end up paying for hotels for them to work in Wales and Scotland. I've done a week in Wales earlier this year through one of the agencies they use for coordinators, and I know of some people who were sent up to Scotland recently for the Prestwick Town block. With Go Ahead paying around £19ph for controllers, I imagine Abellio will have to end up increasing their rates from £13 or have to hire a load more staff
