I'm not at all suprised to read this, even at peak times the Bromley section is poorly used although by contrast the 477 is quite busy in and out of Orpington. I would have thought extending the R5/10 to Sevenoaks would be the best solution? I sort of agree but you couldn't extend the R5/10 to Sevenoaks in their current form as they are circulars, admittedly with a short spur to Halstead. When there was the consultation about reducing the frequency of the R5/10 a few years ago, I was in favour of losing the Halstead section to try & retain the hourly frequency and also to make the 402 more sustainable. We're back to the question of what TfL should run in terms of out-county services. Beyond Pratt's Bottom, it's Kent - in fact didn't Knockholt get itself taken out of Greater London? There's not much of a case for retaining the London bit of the 402: the 358 covers Bromley to Green St Green and the Hopper allows onward journeys on the R5/10 to Pratt's Bottom, Knockholt Pound and Halstead. Outside London, there's trains from Knockholt to Dunton Green and Sevenoaks. If TfL feels the Sevenoaks section needs a service, then I think they do need to consider the R5/10 (possibly R7 too) at the same time and recast them rather than just offering a direct 'R12' replacement. I'd go further and do a 'Roundabout 2' on the rural Orpington services, bringing in smaller Ashford-style buses as a trial. As snoggle notes, this does not fit well with the recent Orpington tendering exercise. Knockholt was only part of London Borough of Bromley for 4 years until in 1969, after a successful campaign, they were moved into Kent & the district of Sevenoaks.

As snoggle notes, this does not fit well with the recent Orpington tendering exercise. What I basically had in mind was an hourly Orpington to Sevenoaks service alternating via Cudham or Pratts Bottom with the double run to Halstead. I can't see the Sevenoaks to Bromley link being kept unless one bus an hour on the 336 was extended to Sevenoaks but it obviously goes against TfL's standardisation policy.

Well that's really surprising, I thought we'd seen the end of blue buses in Bromley.

If it has, they wouldn't announce it this early I think TfL prop told Arriva bus too short notice for withdrawn it. It had to be 56 days notes for wanting withdrawn 402 beyond the London area. I hope TfL need something to come up with new TfL route to run replacement somehow! Or i bet Go-Coach want to try out on current route 402 between Orpington and Sevenoaks Instead of Bromley? It got to be need to catch passenger to try this bus out! I understand Arriva want to withdrawn it because not making enough money plus long way from Tunbridge Well Bus Garage. Most of bus drivers in my life which i find so rude to me because i got the freedom pass when i get on it. Plus Arriva put 402 leave few mintues early from Bromley north to avoid us using it at Green Street Green after 9.30am! which is their fault for losing people!

I've used the 9:04 journey before and they have never left Bromley early and is timed through GSG at 09:29 so it's not that they are early it's the time it's due there, so can't use your pass.

They already operate the 402 extras between Badgers Mount and Sevenoaks schools and also operate two other school routes in the Orpington area. If they can make it work for them it wouldn't surprise me at all to see Go Coach have a go at something

Shame though.

If not, maybe to do Orpington, The Walnuts to Sevenoaks or Orpington Station to Sevenoaks It would be good enough for two buses run every hour service? To Avoid the busy section of Bromley - Farnborough?

Go Coach took over a few of Arriva's routes before. The 421 between Swanley and Sevenoaks, the 478 between Swanley and West Kingsdown, and the Swanley to Dartford section of the 423 (which became the 429). I wouldn't be surprised to see them give it a try between Orpington and Sevenoaks.
