Why change the 490? The link to Pools isn't well used but is used by folk coming in from Twickenham. It's an excuse to provide a stand as much as anything since there never was a bus there. OK it's a leisure facility but not the busiest nor the biggest of its kind. Keep the 490 as-is but add an extra deck on top. I don' think there is a road restriction affecting that. The 493 is long and tiresome. It's the only direct public transport link for many people to St. George's Hospital even if it takes them an hour to get there. It suffers from traffic delays at times in common with all routes through Barnes Common and Wimbledon. You fix that by better traffic management not by bisecting the route. TfL controls some of the roads involved. The only thing I will agree with is that St George’s needs better links from surrounding areas like Morden. I live on the Sutton side but I’d rather they unplug me than go to St Helier, absolute shithole. The last time I needed to go to A&E from my GP I specifically had him put it into St George’s as I was not going to St Helier. Rather like with the Tram exention into Sutton, plans to re build St Helier were in the local paper 20 plus years ago and still never happened.

The saddest part is all the locals who are clinging onto the decaying crumbling buildings. It’s a horrible hospital and massively outdated compared to more modern facilities in Kingston and at St George’s. But the local morons can’t see that building a new hospital is the only sensible step.

I don't think Southmead Road is the reason, double deckers can quite easily run on roads narrower than that. I suspect Beaumont Road having some low trees is probably the more likely reason why the 639, for example, runs in both directions along Princes Way rather than following the 39 & 439 onto Beaumont Road. I'm not very familiar with the area but would it miss out too many roads if it went via the 639 routeing and went DD? Not really as the 39 does follow the 639 in one direction

I believe why the 490 is regularly suggested to be chopped back is because the Pools on the Park section (once off the A316) has a rumored restriction with trees - other than that, I don't think anyone would cut it back in all honesty. I agree with the second point regarding the 493 and traffic management though I don't think the latter will ever happen.

The 493 takes on par or perhaps even longer than many long distance central London routes (21,25,36,149 etc) to go from end to end. This is the reason why I proposed for it to be split, to improve reliability & more evenly distribute some of the lengths of routes in London.

Slashing a route in half or whatever would mean reducing it in PVR or retaining the same frequency. It doesn’t solve those problems at all. Only solid cooperation between councils to ensure roadworks are minimised, traffic can consistently flow and any street schemes are echoed across areas not just in one small part.

There is an overhanging tree at Pools on the Park which is the entire reason the 490 isn’t decked so its stand would need to be swapped with another route if it were to become decked. There are also issues with the stands at Manor Circus atm but maybe once those clear the 490 could swap termini with the R70 (R68 restored to Kew Retail Park as well) to enable the route to become decked. One tree holds a beneficial route change to ransom! But fair enough as the tree was there first and we need more trees. The 490 can turn and stand at Manor Circus on Lower Mortlake Road once the works are finished. I don't think it needs to go into the R70 stand which is a bit tricky at the best of times. The number of people using he 490 to Pools is really small and the likely response to removing it from just one stop probably no more than a lone keyboard warrior. So no need either to send the R70 that way; keep it as is unless taking it away from its own Manor circus stand improves overall safety.

The only thing I will agree with is that St George’s needs better links from surrounding areas like Morden. Now the 470 is being shortened to Sutton, would extending it from Colliers Wood to St Georges Hospital be a good idea? I know it's a very low frequency route, but it would provide new links to St Georges Hospital from Morden, St Helier (near the station) and Sutton Common.

That isn’t a terrible idea and I think if it was extended past Merton garage, down Haydons Road and then up Plough Lane it would give another direct link to the tube for residents there. It could then retain a PVR of 7.

I don't think this is a bad idea but there are a lot of slight problems with this unfortunately. Traffic between Colliers Wood and Tooting with the cycle lane wasting space and buses blocking all traffic when they stop, no stand space around the hospital, deciding whether or not the route should go around Tooting Broadway, etc. The nearest vacant stand is probably Wimbledon Road which could be reached after going through the hospital but again it will just be battling traffic to and fro. I wondered about the S1 running down Longley Rd to the hospital before however it would have similar problems. The 493 should just be increased, TfL have never tried to cut or split it in half before so I think its unlikely that will happen Also just seen the post above about Plough Lane, not a bad idea either.

So unless you adjusted the frequency, it wouldn't need 7 buses for an extended service. Believe the revised 470 PVR is going to be 4.

Can the 135 and 214 buses be merged from Crossharbour to Parliament Hill Fields?

Can the 135 and 214 buses be merged from Crossharbour to Parliament Hill Fields? With respect this is getting a bit silly now. Why would such a route even be needed? Please don't say to give Parliament Hill a link to Canary Wharf as there is not one.

Please don't say to give Parliament Hill a link to Canary Wharf as there is not one. I only asked if it can happen. I didn’t say it should happen. I only thought about that because 214 is mostly packed between Kentish Town and Kings Cross and I’m aware it can’t be DD’s because of the turn at Highgate West Hill to Holly Terrace. Furthermore it’s not the Parliament Hill and Canary Wharf link as that’s not needed. Although a Camden Town link with Canary Wharf and Liverpool Street is not too bad.
