This has been mentioned on the Mayoral election thread, but I understand not everyone may keep up with that thread and this one could potentially be interesting to all users on this forum. Should Khan win the Overground lines will be renamed. www.standard.co.uk/news/mayor/london-overground-renamed-sadiq-khan-diversity-b930046.htmlIt was suggested that the unofficial names used at the moment would be adopted, but it seems that will not be the case. With the lines reflecting on people and history of each specific line. This could see the lines named after people, landmarks and places on the specific lines. It could lead to some quite interesting names. The lines as they stand are ● Richmond and Clapham Junction to Stratford ● Watford Junction to Euston ● Gospel Oak to Barking ● Highbury & Islington to New Cross, Clapham Junction, Crystal Palace and West Croydon ● Liverpool Street to Enfield Town, Cheshunt and Chingford ● Romford to Upminster My guess for the North London Line would be for it to be named the Olympic Line due to it running through the Olympic Park, not too sure on the others though.

Before naming the lines, how does it come to the final decision? I think the names of the lines should be apolitical. I can see the argument for them to have separate names, but in the context of what is going on, I really don't see this as a priority. How can you be busy cutting bus services yet have money to rename the lines? Priorities priorities!!!!! Perhaps companies should be allowed to sponsor lines and put their name to them and so raise money for TfL. Perhaps then there would be fewer bus cuts.

This seems like it would be such a massive waste of money at a time when TfL has no cash to spare. Chances are the public would still refer to the collective lines as Overground. Yet again the son of a bus driver just can’t understand public transport needs.

Too many times I hear of ‘delays on the Overground’ and you have to delve deeper to find out exactly which bit of the Overground is affected which is a mite irritating. To that end, names for each line would be good. I think I’d be terribly boring and go for largely geographic names - East London line for the Highbury & Islington - South London grouping, North London line for Richmond/Clapham Junction - Stratford, Watford Line for Euston to Watford Junction, West Anglia line for everything out of Liverpool Street northwards, Gospel Oak to Barking should surely adopt the Goblin name formally, which leaves the little Romford-Upminster line, which I suppose could be called the Havering line.

I agree, communicating information about problems on the Overground has been an issue for a while now and there are clear benefits for passenger information purposes. A delay on the Romford-Upminster line will currently show up as relevant to someone on the Euston-Watford service. If you're reprinting diagrams etc for the start of Elizabeth Line services, it's a natural time to make the change. I am slightly concerned that this is going to become a battleground in the current 'culture wars'. Underground lines have been pretty much neutrally named down the years but I see this process becoming a bit fraught if politics come to the fore.

I don't think the Goblin name would go down well, it's a name initially made up to talk about the reliability of the line which was very poor and these days tends to be solely used by enthusiasts and the user group. I've never actually heard anyone from the public use the name Goblin in recent times, usually just referring to it as "the overground". I'd think the Riverside line would men sense in this instance due to the fact it will terminate at Barking Riverside.

They don't need major rebranding.
Richmond/Clapham Junction to Stratford: North London Line Highbury & Islington/Dalston Junction to West Croydon/Crystal Palace/New Cross: East London Line, reverting back to the LUL brand name. Highbury & Islington/Dalston Junction to Clapham Junction: South London Line Euston to Watford Junction: North West London Line Romford to Upminster: Elmerson line, named after the intermediate station on the branch line. West Anglia lines: Lea Valley Line.
The GOBLIN one is the one I'm stuck with a suggestion for.

The Riverside line is a good one considering it will be there next year In my experience lots of people still use the GOBLIN name, it is well known and I would argue suits the line. I don't see historic unreliability of the line as being a reason not to use the name, that unreliability is thankfully becoming a more distant memory and not associated with the word GOBLIN.

I agree that the GOBLIN name is what people use and I can't see any point in trying to change it. The Northern Line was once dubbed the misery line but nobody has suggested renaming that.

I have been thinking that the line could be called the North London Orbital, a bit like the West London Orbital as it goes a bit out of Inner London.

Literally living here for all the years I have, I've not heard a single member of the public actually refer to it as the Goblin. Its just called the Overground by most people.

Was it known more as the Goblin before the Overground took over? You know what I used to use the line everyday in 1989 to go to School from Barking to Woodgrange Park but for the life of can't remember what it was known as but was probably Goblin.
