Did a quick calculation to see what routes carry the most amount of people per mile. These are the routes that are the most susceptible to overcrowd as on average a large amount of people board buses at each stop. 1.330: 4.3 2. 238: 4.2 3. 69: 3.91 4. 104: 3.90 5. 58: 3.8 6. 41: 3.76 7. 149: 3.74 8. 109: 3.71 9. 29: 3.46 10. 279: 3.4 The top 5 routes all serve Newham, showing how extremely intensively used buses are in that borough. The W7 used to always lead this list but has dropped to 14th place. 11. 18 12. 25 13. 35 14. W7 15. 32 16. 67 17. 147 18. 158 19. 98 20. 257 21. EL1 22. 115 23. 207 24. 144 25. 349 26. 250 27. 259 28. 220 29. 141 30. 243 Really surprised the 43 or any of the Holloway Road routes for that matter are not up there.
The 67 is a real shock, I thought that was pretty deadwood since it's cut to Dalston.
Surprised the 13 or W3 isn't up there. They always seemed pretty busy during the pandemic.

Think that's a reasonable explanation for the W7 drop.

Also the constant lockdowns, generally very middle class "towns" bring a lot of shopping custom, Highgate Village, Muswell Hill, Crouch End to name examples. Pre-pandemic that always bought custom.

That's one reason I always say people can't really speak about routes based on observations at certain times. The data always tells the true story I even said the same in a post I just made about a route local to me.

You've answered it yourself, they have different numbers so are different routes.

One observation I will make however is that since the 39 weeks recorded (July 2020-April 2021) public transport has definitely got busier as a whole

I debated that too but at the end of the day they are different designations, different passengers use each for different journeys and that's how the data is collected.

Talking in general and even before Covid people used to make bold suggestions about routes not being needed based on seeing buses at certain times.

I would say that the ridiculous frequency reduction on the N9 shows the folly of relying on data.

I definitely remember passenger complaints had something to do with the 136 extension & the addition of the 168 down the Old Kent Road, I think the N15s frequency was increased at one point just down to drivers observations?

Picking out one more interesting stat from the data:
Least used double deck routes (excluding any double deck routes that converted during the sample time):
1. Route 467 : 52,874 2. Route X68 : 92,379 3. Route 129 : 276,304 4. Route 412 : 296,005 5. Route 317 : 339,794 6. Route 423 : 379,048 7. Route 498 : 386,498 8. Route 335 : 426,852 9. Route 492 : 448,029 10. Route 406 : 461,973

I would say that the ridiculous frequency reduction on the N9 shows the folly of relying on data. Whose to say TfL are cutting routes based on this data. I mean, the N9 has been cut yet we all agree it's the wrong move - they might have issues but I can't see them using this data to contradict themselves?

What else can they do if they don't use data? how else can you measure usage? You seem to be suggesting more people are using buses than the data suggests! must be lots of freeloaders then.
