I used to find a police car always parked by the junction of Clarendon Rise and Lee High Road in the evening at lewisham. I used to think - oh such a dodgy area, police around all the time Till the time i figured out they were grabbing dinner at Nando’s which is there at the corner!!!! Ok so today (Sunday) I was in lewisham to pick up some stuff from the Indian convenience store opposite the nando’s. I was parking on Lee High Road (facing east on the east facing side); while parallel parking I all of a sudden saw what were fumes emanating from the bonnet. I was dead scared, finished parking asap and literally jumped out to see what was happening. Turns out some lowlife had thrown a lit cigarette butt onto the bonnet - mercifully it was raining and I was quick so no harm done Quickly finish my shopping. I come back, see a hooded person walking ahead of me casting more than a cursory look at the car. I take off my hood just to make sure no one is behind me - guy spots me and hastens on. Only then so I unlock the car, dump in the shopping and run Lee can be very unsafe, glad you were okay!

An Amazon van doing multiple drops in the same road, is more environmentally friendly than the people receiving their Amazon goods driving out to buy their goods instead.
Death of the High Street is the car parking charges, people want to park for free, like retail parks Orpington and Crayford are good examples. In Bexleyheath (where I live) the council parking got taken over by a new contractor, they put new parking machines in with number plate recognition, no more parking attendant, oh yeah the parking went up from 70p to £1.20 for 1 hour.

As I've already said, this depends on on the high street in question - it's not a hard and fast rule for every high street. For example, in Brixton, parking has always been bad when coming by car and we had a multi storey car park removed to the relief of everyone as it was a crime magnet and yet, the high street is still going strong.

I think car parking charges are quite key - I have now developed a strong preference for bluewater / lakeside as you can spend the entire day there with free parking and still have less crowds vs Westfield at Stratford (ironically despite being double distance it takes less time to bluewater from Blackheath than Stratford!) Also while I am indeed a big fan of online shopping, must admit that there needs to be a balance. You need the high street to survive as well else you have the usual repurcussions on jobs / crime etc

Very true and extortionate parking charges are a major factor in town centre decline when most out of town shopping centres offer free parking.

That is all very good, but if on one trip you would have bought 4 things, but you now have 4 delivery drivers. Which one is more environmentally friendly? But otherwise totally agree anti-parking measures have killed off town centres.

All this talk of parking makes me glad I haven’t bothered learning to drive yet. It’s so much easier in Greater London to just get on a bus, or if I want to go further away to get on a train.

The cost of petrol is starting to put people off driving or at least cut back. I will have to consider my options once petrol gets close to £2 a litre!

Bexleyheath and Bexley council in general need to start building at a higher density rate if they want to rejuvenate their town centres (Bexleyheath/Erith) nightlife needs improving as well.
Realistically that GOBLIN extension to Thamesmead would be perfect if it terminated in Bexleyheath Town Centre, Costly however.

Would likely have to demolish quite a significant part of the borough to make space.

And don’t forget even if you order from the same retailer / Amazon things arrive on different dates from different warehouses by different drivers. Amazon is particularly bad - things come in so many tranches! I have given up and left it to my better half for Amazon at least

Well that links into my other idea.. the majority of what would be removed (I’d imagine an extension like this would be underground) would be 1930’s housing estates which whilst good they are all over the borough and removing *some* of those and creating denser suburban areas similar to Kidbrooke/Thamesmead could not only help our housing crisis but bring more people into our declining high streets.

The only solution to link Thamesmead and Abbey Wood with Bexleyheath by rail would be if TFL bothered with trams. But they obviously have no interest in putting the money into it, so the new 301 bus is the best we’ll get.
