Yes I don't remember an 8/C2 consultation. I wonder why they wouldnt divert the 8 via Regent Street and Conduit Street as opposed to Oxford Street and Park Lane? Southbound is the easy bit, northbound would have been tricky. If the 8 were to go via Conduit Street and Regent Street, it'd have to negotiate Hanover Square, Holles Street and then the 55/73 LoR to access New Oxford Street. That's probably why TfL took the decision to cut the 8 to Oxford Circus. Yes ofcourse I'm forgetting the C2 went North to South on Regent Street. Tbh it wasn't a terrible decision to pull back to Oxo for the 8 as the 38/73 still linked TCR to Victoria. It was the pull back to the other side of TCR that really took potential away from the 8.

Back in 1990 very little even terminated at Oxford Circus with the 7, 8, 12, 15n 25, 159 etc all passing through.

Plus for parts of the 8 ran in sections anyways so it wasn't really a cross town section on many long routes.

As far as I can recall the 8 was pretty much all end to end, in fact for several years it was solely operated by BW with WH getting the Sunday allocation when it went OPO.

Would anyone happen to recall how well loaded the 8 and C2 were on the Berkeley Square section?

Abbey Street bridge is not the problem, trees in Sutherland Street near Victoria and apparently there are other residential problems in Rotherhithe. So really it is a route which is restricted to SDs then. Maybe one solution would be 4 extra journeys in the peaks from just Waterloo to Victoria using 2 buses. I don't think it's every been outright confirmed what the issues are with the C10 but certainly it's been mentioned how double deckers are deterred from using Abbey Street when running light due to the nature of the bridge in question - almost single file traffic due to arches and a longer bridge in terms of length to pass under than others elsewhere. Given how pretty much all single file bridges in London are not used by double deckers bar the N22 at night running under Barnes Railway Bridge when traffic is very light, it's very much possible TfL has an unwritten rule of not allowing double deckers under these sort of bridges where possible on safety grounds - E2 came to a cropper under the one in North London that the 46 runs under following a diversion on the 24.

It would probably be quite sensible if that was a rule tbh. At busy times waiting for the road to be clear in order to pass over both lanes you could be waiting a very long time plus not to mention holding up all the traffic behind.

All I'm gonna say is the 381 doesn't go down Rotherhithe Street or by the farm for a reason it's not suitable for deckers. So that could be another reason why the C10 will never see deckers. Also the bridge In Abbey Street is low, I've never seen a decker take the road in or out of service.

It's low if you don't straddle the middle of the road on Abbey Street but double deckers running light have passed under it without incident by using the middle of the road however, it's not really feasible for a normal double decker service to do so during the day.

Its also just a case of minimising risk isn’t it, it would only take one minor lapse of concentration or distraction and the roof could quite easily come off. It’s a risk best avoided imo

It’s a risk best avoided imo You couldn't rip the roof off a double decker at Abbey Street if you tried! Out of service double deckers go under the bridge without any problem at all. To reiterate, it's restrictions at Rotherhithe Street and Sutherland Street that prevent double deckers on the C10.

I do think the C10 should now drop the C and become plain 10… 😶
