Pleasantly surprised to see it has all gone well this weekend, I will admit I was skeptical of the plans for SMA7... we shall see it in full force tomorrow morning whether it can handle a morning peak at Upminster Depot! As a result of the signalling commissioning (along with the opening of the Elizabeth Line through the core), the District line will see far fewer east end closures. There may be the odd few due to Network Rail engineering works along the c2c. Nothing particularly exciting of the sort. I was at Barking this morning and thinking (although it would never happen ) they need to close Barking for about two weeks have a blockade or something and just throw lots of builders at it and do a major refurb 😂 , Some of the ground on the Platforms is uneven and need leveling out , there is still Network South East signage which stopped existing basically 30 years ago , it's dark and dinghy in some parts , the subways are rotten and need more than a pick of paint , it's like a relic from the 80s I know there are some 60s themed stations maybe that is what they are going for with Barking , but even with the refurbishment that is taking place upstairs it's still a very tired very pre 1990s station could do with a big refurb . Barking has always reminded me of Wimbledon Station in the 90s, except Wimbledon has since had money spent on it to improve parts.

Don't mention dinghies, you'll trigger the Home Secretary TfL are more concerned with blowing £4m to rename the Overground lines, rather than take care of some stations like Barking They probably say it's down to GBR (Great British Railways / Network Rail) to tart the place up, as shared stations seem to take longer to deal with

The District Line has come a long way from the D78 stock days.
I still remembered when those trains had the famous Misha Black moquette.
On another note I did feel for some of the drivers especially when they had to pass through the East End of the line. Between Elm Park to Bow Road was probably the worst part of the line where people would stand on the bridges and throw stones at the windows. The amount of times I'd overhear people back at school talk about how they used to do that.
Needless to say some of them are living a life of regret now. I wouldn't be surprised if that was the cause of introducing railings on bridges to stop that from happening.

Unpopular opinion but I didn't like the D stock at all - single leaf doors and they were cold in the winter. I much preferred the C stock which is probably an equally unpopular opinion

They had to retrofit those on.

I wouldn't be surprised if that was the cause of introducing railings on bridges to stop that from happening. In the early-80s when operating CO/CP or R Stock it was a regular occurrence to find air-rifle holes in the windows, after passing Barking and Upney. Being plate glass the window wouldn’t shatter as the toughened glass fitted D Stock would.

Always had a nice solid feel to them and lots of doors. Really they didn't feel 40 years old by 2010 in my opinion on the Circle and Hammersmith lines.

Not to mention some of the one under situations that would also occur on that side of the line.

C77s were slightly better (ie warmer to drive) than C69. A nice unexpected run to Richmond or Ealing was always welcome, although before the blinds were updated those destinations weren’t included.
