What team do you think would win the world cup? Voting ends on Sunday at 4pm when kick off for the first game starts. (You can only vote once)

Personally think the WC Winners curse is going to plague them like it did Germany, Spain and Italy (none made it out the GC the tournament after they won it)

I am really not getting into this world cup and at the moment, don't care who wins it. World cups are normally a good filler for the close season. This year it is an unwanted interruption to the season, in a country rife with inequalities and abuses. Probably going to veto it

Probably going to veto it The one which is most upsetting are the deaths of the migrant workers who have toiled in harsh, near slavery conditions (think doing construction jobs but at 50 degrees in summer in the desert with minimal PPE, rock-bottom salaries, abusive superiors, passports taken away the moment you land in the country etc etc. no clue how many died in the process No sympathy for the people crying out because of no beer. In rome, do as the romans do. This was expected if you host the game in a deeply conservative Islamic country!

Heart says France but money in brown paper bag says Qatar Enough controversy to give the Tories a run for their money, it's careering out of control like a 144 bus with no brakes... the plug pulled on beer sales 2 days before it starts, it will be interesting seeing this competition in such a hardline authoritarian state. It will be interesting not seeing half-baked England fans not throwing chairs at police after drinking most of the afternoon The stifling heat against the backdrop of corruption (even FIFA now admit choosing Qatar was a mistake - after taking their money ) will make for an interesting few days...

Rather amusing find on twitter is I read a story (remember, this is twitter) that Qatar have bribed Ecuador to lose the first match 1-0, with a second half goal. Let's see if that comes true My natural reaction is a country like Qatar is capable of that level of cheating. I mean, they cheated to host the competition in the first place

All I can hope is lessons are learned in the future when it comes to picking such a backwards & corrupt host as Qatar but I'm not holding my breath - we'll be here again in the future

The obvious question about the alcohol ban is why it's only being announced now? Surely it should have been made clear from the outset?
I'm struggling to get much in the way of enthusiasm about the tournament, maybe I'll feel different when it gets underway. I probably won't bother watching the opening game tomorrow and I'll watch the England v Iran game in the pub on Monday. Hopefully a good England performance will generate a bit more interest, I've not seen any England flags on cars thus far. Meanwhile lower league football will carry on as normal throughout the tournament and at least those clubs should benefit from increased attendances.

This year it is an unwanted interruption to the season, in a country rife with inequalities and abuses. Probably going to veto it I would still watch it. There has been a lot of press agenda backlash at trying to silent the world cup etc. but when it is in other countries with various other serious atrocities etc they turn a blind eye to them. It is always of what suits their own personal agenda. My only gripe is it is the wrong time of the year, it really should have been in the summer, despite the heat in Qatar

I was actually surprised beer was going to be sold, as I did not realise alcohol was sold in Qatar, so a ban does not surprise me.
