Whilst not a USA fan at all, I was pleased they made it through - they've been pretty decent barring their second half performance vs Wales where they seemingly just ran out of puff before conceding a late penalty but have been much better in the other two group games. Also congrats to Senegal for their result against Ecuador, wasn't a bad watch that game in all honesty

I was screaming at my TV when Saudi Arabia scored. What a match!!! That Saudi goal helped us go through on goal difference rather than fair play, something I'd be ashamed to qualify for via that particular aspect. We've been very fortunate to qualify as we've been very poor so far but our target was probably last 16 and we made it, first time since 1986 IIRC

The great thing about this World Cup is that no so-called big team can turn up and simply walk over the opponent. If big teams rest players or show any complacency, they’re getting beaten or losing points to historically smaller nations. The unpredictability has been brilliant. Hopefully England’s close shave with the USA will put them in the right headspace for the Senegal match. If any of England players don’t show up, Senegal will capitalise.
Who does everyone think will win now? Head: Brazil Heart: England

Who could have forseen Japan beating Germany and Spain but losing to Costa Rica in between?

Love to see the cheat Suarez crying at the end. The way it happened was beautiful.
As for Brazil…like I said above, any big team doesn’t show up thinking they can simply turn up and win is in trouble. Fantastic win for Cameroon, what a header!
Every team looking beatable so far in this World Cup. Great tournament.

Every team looking beatable so far in this World Cup. Great tournament. I totally agree with you about Saurez and he certainly wouldn't get much sympathy from the Ghanaians, some disgraceful behaviour from some of his team mates as well. By contrast nice to see Vincent Aboubakar accept his second yellow card and subsequent red with such good grace after scoring the winner against Brazil. Some great games over the last few days and hopefully the knockout stages will be just as good. I'll stick my neck on the block and predict the last 8 will be USA, Argentina, France, England, Japan, Brazil, Spain and Switzerland.

I thought it was good of the referee to apologise to him for having to send him off! It was clearly a huge moment for Aboubakar and makes a mockery of the rule that says taking your shirt off is a booking. Does anyone know why this happens? Personally I think it’s a ridiculous rule The final group games have all been fantastically dramatic - it makes no sense that FIFA are set on 16 groups of 3 at the next World Cup. Whatever they do there are going to be final games played at walking pace because a draw sends both sides through Your final eight is probably about right although I fancy Morocco to possibly pull off a shock and I’ll definitely be cheering for Australia tonight! Regardless of anyone’s thoughts on the host nation I think the football and the competition in this World Cup has been first class. I didn’t think the last World Cup would be bettered but I definitely think we’re getting there And on an England note - this has to be one of the most successful group stages we’ve ever had. We are one of only five unbeaten nations and joint top for goals scored and points won. Grinding out a draw against a tricky US side doesn’t seem quite as bad now

Grinding out a draw against a tricky US side doesn’t seem quite as bad now I've never understood why players feel the need to take their shirt off to celebrate a goal, if I remember correctly there was a bizarre incident involving Diego Forlan years ago still running round without his shirt on when the game resumed? I'm a bit dubious about increasing it to 48 countries at the next world cup. I'll certainly be cheering on the Aussies tonight, I can't see them beating Argentina but who knows. I'm sure there are a few more shocks to come and the possibility of penalty shoot outs and yes leaving the political issues aside it's been a great world cup so far.

I'm still happy that rat looking biting cheat of a human was crying last night. As much as I'm annoyed Ghana didn't win. They went with the approach of sinking to hell with their enemy. If they go down they'll take their enemy too. The unbelievable scenes at the end especially with Cavani pushing the VAR TV down.
