An interesting development in respect of route 11's upcoming conversion to NB4L. From the Financial Times where Isabel Dedring, Deputy Mayor for Transport was interviewed. In short she said the NB4Ls will be phased in to service rather than a mass conversion. This is to avoid a repeat of the issues with route 24 where the faulty air cooling systems caused disproportionate disruption. Note - the FT link may be behind a paywall. I have limited free access to FT articles so it works for me.

This may also be helpful for Wrightbus if they're struggling to meet the fairly tight conversion dates between routes - I think there's only about 6 weeks each between the 11 and 9, and 9 and 390. I do not know why TFL really need to rush with the conversion of 20 routes out of 600 NBFL's. But i count that 4 and a half (i know 38 is still on the prototypes) routes by the end of this year will be NBFL's. But how many NBFL's in total will be in service before the end of 2013? Under a hundred.

I see, from an admittedly biased sample of tweets, that people are boiling to death on NB4Ls which are in service today. And there was TfL saying the air con issue was all fixed. Makes note - no rides on NB4Ls in hot weather.

Another sauna was the 148 yesterday - me and a friend didn't want to stand more than one stop of it! It was a relief with what felt like very cool breeze when we got off. It was just the temperature difference, rather!

I was also on a roasting 148 a few days ago, when it was much cooler than it is today. I'd hate to be on a NBfL today! Other 'oven' buses are the Citaros on the 507/521 and to a lesser extent, the 53's Gemini 3s.

I took a 24 today with no discernible aircon Thankfully, the 134 was more pleasant to be on, if not for two ladies literally shouting at each other behind me

The way that the Citaros on the 507 and 521 load up (game of sardines, anyone?) is always going to cause cooling issues. The Gemini 3s on the 53 seem to get unacceptably hot. Was on LT228 on route 38 on Friday, and that seemed OK... Perhaps I was lucky!

The way that the Citaros on the 507 and 521 load up (game of sardines, anyone?) is always going to cause cooling issues. It's more due to the lack of hopper style windows, as well as the IMMENSE amount of heat that the mighty engine created by the rear of the bus. I don't think the two BYD electric buses are anywhere near as bad as the Citaros... Gemini 2s seem to be the most comfortable buses to be on in this weather, even though I *hate* them!

I don't think the two BYD electric buses are anywhere near as bad as the Citaros... That's because they spend most of the time off the road!!

If all these buses are hot now when we are barely entering the 70° range, I can only imagine what it will be like when we get some 'real' 85+ summer.
