I don't think the noisy Volvo's are a reasonable objection because wherever you stick them, they will be inconvenient to people so I don't understand how one group of people who live along Route A are more important than the group of people who live along Route B. Also, London is already a noisy place - emergency service vehicles with sirens, dustcarts taking the trash away, motorbikes, etc, so personally, people cant really moan at Volvo fans especially when they are only around for 10-15 years and the other things I mentioned are a constant feature of London life. The best place for noisy Volvo's at night is in the garage, a friend of mine lives near the 176 route and mentioned the racket they make in the dead of night, fortunately for him T's are the norm at night now. I live next to Effra Road so I hear N's VLA's all the time as well as the PVL's that pop onto the 37 from time to time and also the 196 which regularly has WVL's working the route and the 'racket' is no louder than the other noisy things I mentioned.

I used to hear them slogging up the hill, you could set your watch by the time they passed at night. Double glazing is a blessing, but the Volvos are more of a nuisance on warm summer nights when I like to have the window slightly ajar.

But you're hardly comparing like with like, dustcarts or emergency vehicles don't go through residential areas at regular intervals throughout the night, indeed the latter are instructed not to use sirens at night unnecessarily. The Urbanite summed it up very well.

London is London but people don't all live in noisy areas, and night buses don't exclusively travel through noisy areas. Volvo B7TL's are very noisy and that noise seems all the worse at night when there is no significant background to drown it out. Where a quieter alternative type is available to be used at night I believe that it is totally appropriate to do so and keep the noisy Volvos parked up. I am writing this as somebody who much prefers Volvos to the obvious alternative...

Last train to Central London from Leytonstone on Sunday Night is 23:25 but the first N8 into the city is 50 mins later 00:15! Hoping that there is going to be better intergration between the Night Tube and Night Bus services come September. Still hoping for a half hourly NW15!

As it now appears that the Night Tube first phase is now down to 2 lines (as per the TfL "100 days" presentation) which I assume will be Victoria and Central lines because there's no Tube Lines maintenance involvement then I reckon the accompanying night bus changes will be as follows :-
Weekend Night Routes added - 34, 123, 145, 158, 296, E1, W3 and W7 (possible question mark over 34 and W3 due to Nor / Picc Line not starting)
Existing Night routes amended - 94, N8, N38, N73, N86, N207 (N8 and N86 may be dependent on Jubilee Line starting)
If the two lines are due to start within the first 100 days of the Mayoralty then it has to be in place by early August. I suspect it might be the last week of July.
This leaves the following for a later phase (assuming Jubilee, Northern and Picc all start together)
Weekend Night Routes added - 34?, 114, 183, 307, 319, H32, W3?
Existing Night routes amended - 14, 88, 134, N5, N9, N20, N29, N91, N97, N98, N155

A night 296 is possible, sure NS would welcome more night space for vehicles. N86.....see I still wonder whether it will be cut back from Harold Hill to Romford and made a 24 hour 86, maybe a slight increase to every 20 minutes at weekends? From that possibly a 24 hour 174 to continue the Harold Hill section which could also take a little pressure off the N15 of a weekend towards Dagenham. 30 minute frequency on that one too. Of course TfL could have a completely different idea on this but that's how I think it would benefit the Romford and Ilford areas with those routes.

All the things I quoted are TfL's own proposals in its own consultation from last year. I was merely speculating as to how TfL may choose to phase in their introduction given they now appear to be phasing in the introduction of the Night Tube itself.

I o ly ask for selfish reasons, a night 145 will make my journey home from the Cauliflower or Admiral Vernon at Heathway so much easier after a few Whiskeys (in the Jar)

That's one guaranteed customer; maybe a few more of the boozey brigade and some early shift workers then the service can commence!!

I o ly ask for selfish reasons, a night 145 will make my journey home from the Cauliflower or Admiral Vernon at Heathway so much easier after a few Whiskeys (in the Jar) TfL have apparently refused to confirm what two tube lines are referred to on their "we'll do what you want Mr Mayor" presentation. However we know Tube Lines maintenance staff are in dispute over the Night Tube so that rules out J, N and P (Jubilee, Northern and Picc). That only leaves Central and Victoria. My guess is that the night tube will come in in late July for those lines. I'd expect bus routes linking with / night buses paralleling those lines to have their planned changes then but perhaps TfL will delay the night bus reductions until things calm down a tad? That will mean I have more buses overnight Fri / Sat and Sat / Sun at my local stops than anytime during the week. How bonkers is that?
