Just out of interest how do Southern get away with charging for first class? It is the same table, with the same seat but with a head cover. I think Southern (and SE) have stopped first class for this reason. Bafflingly, the Gatwick Express still has first class, despite just being an antimacassar and a bit more quiet! Quiet zones exist, you know, and you don't have to pay extra.

I can't really think of any scenario this could happen in practice. East Croydon to Victoria for instance is served exclusively by mainline trains so there is no metro service to confuse it with. Also in the other direction it will be painfully obvious.

Yes, you can sit in the first class area on a metro service as there are no first class fares on metro routes. The southern website lists which routes have First Class and which don't www.southernrailway.com/tickets-and-payment-methods/first-class

So on Southern I can sit in first class with a standard ticket? Only on the Metro services. And on those services along the Sussex coast which are advertised as Standard Class only. A relic from the ays of class 313 operation which persists for now at least. All trains are now operated by class 377 or 387 units all of which include first class. Basically the Brighton - Southampton trains are two-class and the rest are standard class no matter what colour the train is. There are exceptions.
