I'm happy that all my top teams are still in the competition but I know at least one of them is going to get eliminated on the round of 16 and it sucks that they're all on the same side of the paths, whereas England, Germany and Netherlands are on the other side of the paths. England somehow extremely lucked out, arguably getting the weakest of the big three that were in the group of death. Should they hold up against Germany I think England stand a very good chance of making it to the Final.

I'm slyly on the fence with England because the only two sides I can see being a threat to England apart from Germany is Wales and Netherlands. If fate has it so they could meet Czech Republic again. What are the odds on that 😂.

I did not see Scotland going to knockouts. They have always been over-rated imo. Don’t understand how they’ve always been overrated? They’ve been rated just right - a decent team with lacks a clinical striker. People need to remember they have a much smaller talent pool to pick from than England so the fact they managed to get a decent starting 11 and one or two good subs shows they’re making progress. Qualifying for the tournament was the first step and they need to make this a habit rather than go another 20 odd years and the second is to blood some young guns which they have a few talents coming through alongside the likes of Gilmour. But there are other countries smaller than Scotland and have fielded better teams over the years.

But there are other countries smaller than Scotland and have fielded better teams over the years. Like who for example? Iceland? Really enjoyed the final two games of Group F - fantastic ride that saw England playing every one of them at one point! I can’t work out though if the teams were just not as good as I expected them to be or they simply cancelled each other out. Certainly, on the face of it, Germany doesn’t seem as big of an ask as it has done in the past. I’m very wary of them though because if any team knows tournament football it’s the Germans. It should be an incredible atmosphere at Wembley next Tuesday and I’m looking forward to seeing if England turn up

Wales and Northern Ireland have punched way above their weight in recent years

That Iceland team isn’t better than the current Scotland team How about closer to home? Wales and Northern Ireland have punched way above their weight in recent years Wales is a fair shout though it must be remembered that their squad mostly plays in the top two divisions in England and many come through Cardiff, Swansea & Liverpool academies. Scotland meanwhile, whilst having some players in the Prem & Championship also have a number playing for Scottish teams outside of Rangers & Celtic where the quality of football and players is generally poor as the money in Scotland is nowhere what it is in England. I’d disagree with Northern Ireland myself.

We should cycle back to the original question: countries that are smaller than Scotland that have fielded better teams. For me, both Wales and Northern Ireland fit that criteria. If Scotland had better players they would be playing for bigger teams - with John McGinn being linked with Liverpool maybe that will start to change

If Scotland had better players they would be playing for bigger teams - with John McGinn being linked with Liverpool maybe that will start to change Northern Ireland don’t fit that criteria because very few of their players play in the top two divisions so clearly they aren’t better. As I already said, Wales are a good shout but it must be remembered that unlike Scottish players, almost every Welsh player doesn’t come through the Welsh league system but comes through clubs like Cardiff, Swansea & Liverpool among others. I did also previously state that Scotland have started to produce better players and obviously need to continue this going forward as this will help the national team improve.

The original question was countries smaller than Scotland that have fielded better teams. A better team isn’t necessarily one with better players. The Northern Ireland team of recent years has undoubtedly been a better team than Scotland despite having a far smaller pool of players to pick from.

If they manage to despatch Germany I can’t see them getting past the Netherlands, presuming they come through their games.

Wales simply didn’t turn up today - very disappointing for them but Denmark were very good. They are going to be a handful for any team in this tournament

They are going to be a handful for any team in this tournament To be fair I thought Wales started quite brightly but once the Danes switched things around there was only one team in it and the defensive gaffe early in the second half killed off any chance of a Wales comeback. I can't see anything other that an Italy win in tonight's game.
