I’ve got a good one here folks. There’s a stand on Sterling Way a couple of yards from Silver Street. I have no idea what bus would’ve stopped there (or if any at all. All I see are trucks parked by it). So my question is did a bus service used to stop there? Link to the stop: www.google.co.uk/maps/place/A406,+London/@51.6144243,-0.0779638,3a,75y,100.18h,90t/data=!3m4!1e1!3m2!1sQjQE-frnu6pHD3FB5eXGRQ!2e0!4m2!3m1!1s0x48761ebbe7bcca0d:0xde7836a61c3fe452 Isn't it the stand for buses that turn at Great Cambridge Road Roundabout - I've seen a number of buses blinded for it when in North London in the past particularly W6's

There is actually a stand opposite it, on the south side of the A406, which has lost its flag but still has Bus Stand markings in the layby. The south side stand is the official stand for the eastbound 34/102/144 curtailed at North Middlesex Hospital, but I can't think of anything that would use the north side stand. Except maybe as an overflow for the Cambridge Roundabout stand.
My guess is that when the Fore Street tunnel was being built, the opportunity was taken to put in a bus layby on both sides of the road in case they should ever be needed.

I'm sure the 34 would have had a use for it during that route's sectional working days in the 90s - the 'regular' stand closest to the Cambridge roundabout can only take the one bus and it does see ad-hoc use from other passing routes. Baffled as to any kind of use for the adjacent one on the other carriageway, though, as you say they may well have just been added for convenience. When I drive by they do seem to earn their keep as lay-bys.

Having a closer look on Google Maps, there is no way of buses to access the bus stand on the eastbound A406 if they have served the bus stop at the Cambridge Roundabout due to a prohibited turn onto the A406 from Silver Street. My only guess is that this may have been used many years ago when evening journeys on the 29 terminating at Palmers Green Garage had to use this as an overflow due to lack of space in the garage. I don't think this is a problem these days since the expansion of the garage.

The 29 (and subsequently the 141) were for many years scheduled to run empty to Edmonton Cambridge in the evenings (i.e. at times when the garage would be too full). However they used the stand on the Cambridge Roundabout slip road, not the mystery stand on the A406.
Not sure if Cambridge Roundabout is still an official stand for the 141 but in practice most drivers tended to find quicker ways to turn around at times when they couldn't use the garage.

The Cambridge Roundabout stand is still officially allocated to the 141 and is used by route in the evenings; one presumes to keep buses running off duty into AD separate from the ones using the garage to simply turn around.

Officially it’s the stand for the 34/102/144 when terminating short at North Middlesex Hospital. Last stop east bound is outside Pymmes Park ant the eastern end of Silver Street. I looked at the route records for each route.

I looked at the route records for each route. Leonard As I said above, the 34/102/144 stand is on the south side of the A406 (I looked at the route records too). But that still doesn't explain what would use the stand on the north side of the A406. This cannot be accessed by a bus curtailing at North Middlesex Hospital.

There is a bus stand on Exeter Road off of Bounces Road N9 which is a strange place as you can’t get a bus there as the entry into Exeter Road from Town Road for the 192 is too tight. Not sure if it’s purpose!?

Not sure if it’s purpose!? I was looking at that, in passing, the other day. On the W8 blind, there is Bounces Road MONTAGU ROAD, Montagu being at the far end of Bounces, but it is a turn which is no longer in the route spec. I certainly wouldn't care to take a decker into Exeter Road, and back out through whatever side street to get to LOR. That'll be why it is Edmonton Green is the last curtailment. (Also, the stand is on the wrong side of the road for a 192 to get directly from Town Road).

Not sure if it’s purpose!? Had a look on Streetview and I see it is marked as an Alighting Point but not as a Bus Stand. Can't see any marked stands nearby so I still don't know what it would be for.
There's another odd alighting point on Gloucester Drive, just off Green Lanes (south of Manor House).

Does anyone or anywhere document these stands and the history of them or is there just not the information out there? I say that as some stands have interesting history such as the Crown Point stand which has been in three different locations since the early 00’s
