www.se1.news/bakerloop-old-kent-road-bus-sadiq-khan/Sadiq Khan is proposing an express "Bakerloop" bus along the path of the proposed Bakerloo line extension from Lewisham up the Old Kent Road to Elephant as an prequel in the event he is re-elected Mayor on 2nd May. It would use buses in Bakerloo brown livery, as well as similar fixtures and moquette. It would run alongside the existing 21 and 453 routes.

View Attachment No doubt the usual suspects will decry this as a waste of money but I think this would be a useful addition to the local transport network. The current direct bus link between Elephant and Lewisham is the very indirect and slow 136, Old Kent Road is wide enough to allow an express bus to overtake stopping buses and it offers some extra capacity as well as quicker journeys on an already very busy corridor. I suspect this would be numbered 'BL1'

The first thing is the naming and the different livery. If you were going to move away from SuperLoop then why have SL8 and SL6 be part of it. Additionally, of the words Super and Loop, you keep the Loop? While the bird poo on top of the red bus looks good, not sure about the dog poo on top of the bus will look. Other than those minor things the more express route the better. However, as my RR driver was doing 40mph down Old Kent Road, I noticed it was 20, so that will not help.

I agree regarding the 'loop' bit as with the SL6 and SL8, but the route is a great idea as is having it in a special Bakerloo colour scheme.

I think it will be good and I have just been posting about having more radial express routes. I just dont understand why go through the effort of bringing all the express under one scheme (i.e. a different TfL mode in essence) and then almost immediately move away from it. Also, the idea of it being referenced to something that does not exist yet seems a bit odd. It could easily be SL11 and nothing to see here.

Right on cue...
Ironic coming from someone who lost their Freedom Pass and claimed it was stolen and doesn't even know how much the TfL bus fare is.

This was proposed, or at least suggested, sometime ago and I'm sure the fact it's resurfaced in the run up to an election is coincidental🙄. Whilst it does provide a direct link between Elephant & Castle and Lewisham I suspect most people will get a 53 or 453 if that comes first, in fact those routes will probably be in line for some reductions if and when the extension does open, it's been talked about for 50 years or more.

I was just going to write about how if Susan Hall knew how to campaign that she would just keep quiet on this and let social media do the work. She however seems to have once again proved to London why she is unelectable and doesn't understand the importance of buses to Londoners. The execution of this scheme is poor but the concept isn't, and she seems to have attacked the solid concept instead of the poor execution.

Out of curiosity what bit of the scheme do you think is poorly executed? I think it's mostly too early to tell, though it is frustrating the Old Kent Road has gone from 30 to 20 mph speed limits as a start.

The title's a bit misleading as it's not actually a loop routing by definition, like with the Underground via Heathrow Terminal 4. Would be interesting to know the PVR and vehicle specs for such a scenario.

They've gone out of the way to make the 607 and X68 Superloop routes which are radial, yet this is getting it's own separate brand. You could argue that the SL8 should be called 'Centraloop' due to it weaving around the Central Line until Ealing. I think it would have been a good idea integrating this route with the Superloop. While not a loop the brand Superloop has come to mean express.

I’ll be the “usual” suspect with my reply. It does make me laugh how it has taken ULEZ expanding and an upcoming election to suddenly find money to create these new routes. How many years did the network go without any new routes on this scale?
Have TfL given up on new normal all stops routes now?

An express bus on Old Kent Road would be a bit more practical if it wasn’t restricted to 20mph… hopefully this doesn’t impact the 21, 53 or 453’s frequencies because all three of them still provide unique links that this express route won’t.
