Well as a person who used to take those buses on a daily basis and who still takes them regularly, they do have working air con. There was once when the air con wasn't working but I've been on that same bus several times before and after and those other times it was working fine, so I think it is a matter of being unlucky. Seems I've been really 'lucky' today. I have ridden on LT64 on the 11, LT422 and LT454 on the 12, LT33 on the 24, LT491 and LT538 on the 73, LT122, LT139 and LT144 on the 148 and they were all absolutely fine with plenty of cool air coming through the vents, yes some were a bit hot on the lower deck but no more so than any other type of bus. I suspect that I haven't been lucky at all and that is the norm and the only hot air on this subject has come from the regular complainants who clearly have a hidden agenda? Me and you must be the luckiest people in London. It seems that there are angels who are always with us, keeping us cool even on the hottest of buses!

Either the air con is fine and you've been unlucky once or twice, or the air con doesn't work and I've been really lucky dozens of times. I somehow suspect it's the first one. right you are.... Perhaps Camelot can launch a 'Wrightbus Millions' lottery ticket, " if you find one of nine Routemasters with working aircon you can win up to 3 million drachma (£6500) - text 'LT' followed by the fleet number to 40337" money could go to fund hospitals etc...

There are one or two people on here, no names no pack drill, who continually use this forum as a platform to air their anti Boris vendetta, I'm certainly not here to stick up for him but sometimes a bit of perspective is needed.

Becareful! Some might be disappointed with the 'outcome' of this 'competition'

So I took the 8 again today, this time caught one of the 15's buses, LT409. Once again it was cooler than most other models of bus I've been on.

Believe me, buses do get pretty packed there. I've also been on busy LTs on the 15, and experienced the same.

OK was just curious - I love the forum for the pro and anti of this bus - you can really feel the defense in some posts especially the pro LT. The only thing I notice is the huge difference in air flow and stuffiness after traveling from Trafalgar Sq to Aldgate then transferring to a TA on route 115.

If you ask me it's not just LTs that are more stuffy than other buses, newer E400s which don't have many windows also feel stuffier than older buses. However, it doesn't really affect me much; I don't mind it.

....after a little discussion with a stagecoach driver a few days ago regarding air conditioning, I said they probably do not re-gas the air-con he said they take the belts off so that there is no air con unit isn't driven at all for the driver, for me passenger comfort begins with driver comfort. Untrue, The Air-Con is serviced as part of the MOT schedule. Belts are checked every service and if found to be missing then are replaced... Not at go ahead, outside company do it, and don't do it very well!

I sometimes wonder, perhaps the 'cool' air being blown out of the LTs is ambient temperature air? It was relatively fresher recently so maybe the cool air is just an illusion? Aside from the obvious experience on hot days I can't recall any LT blowing out cool air on a cool evening/night. I started thinking about it when I was on LT84 on the 10 today which was blowing out lukewarm air, as opposed to the Gemini 2 and E40D I was on today which were blowing out cool air, the latter certainly enabled for a chilly journey as it was in the evening but I wasn't complaining!

On Saturday, I had terrible luck with hot buses. No LT's but a Enviro 400, MMC, and a number of Enviro 200's all were boiling. Shockingly, a ALX400 Trident as the coolest bus with a nice breeze circulating through with a B9TL & a Omnidekka also faring well.

I frequently board and alight these buses for work purposes, and I am yet to find a moderately (over 1/2) loaded one on a summers day that isn't stupidly hot. Bottom deck worse than the top in most cases, and of course some are better than others.

Untrue, The Air-Con is serviced as part of the MOT schedule. Belts are checked every service and if found to be missing then are replaced... Not at go ahead, outside company do it, and don't do it very well! A/C at Go Ahead is serviced by Clayton/Grayson depending on the make of vehicle and its warranty status. They do a good job, but it's normally just one or two guys doing the whole fleet, as well as other companies they are contracted to. As an ex engineer, the main problem facing the air conditioning on these buses is that most systems run from a belt, and that belt is usually placed in front of the main auxillary belt, meaning that if that belt/an alternator/water pump gets changed, the A/C belt has to come off, and often doesn't go back. B9TLs are a different kettle of fish, Volvo supplied them with a ridiculously over-engineered mini propshaft driven system, and the propshafts were not fit for purpose, and as such kept breaking free and rattling around. As such, most were at one point removed pending a modification. Unsure whether that ever happened.
